State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Mary Frances (Wallace) Van Amringe (1844-1899) was the daughter of Stephen Decatur Wallace of Wilmington, N.C. The family enjoyed a comfortable middle class life in antebellum Wilmington in which the education of the daughters included piano lessons.   This collection of piano music, brought together by Fannie Wallace, is made up of sheet music copyrighted between 1847 and 1861. It consists of one volume containing 51 pieces of sheet music. Four selections in the collection were composed by women.    Mrs. Van Amringe's father, Stephen Decatur Wallace was an officer of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad for whom the town of Wallace was named.    Half the collec�tion is made up of dances (at least 6 polkas, 4 waltzes, 4 Schottisches, a quadrille and a mazurka). The other half is made up of songs popular at mid-century (including \"Home Sweet Home\", \"Old Dog Tray\", \"Sweet Nellie Gray\", \"Dixie's Land\", and so forth). While it is true that many of the pieces were the gift of \"S.V.A.\" (Fannie's future husband, Stacy Van Amringe), still the collection is representative of the taste and discrimination of a young teenaged girl living in Wilmington, N.C., on the eve of the Civil War.    Four selections in the collection composed by the following women composers: Helen S. Leeds, Anna L. Wardelle, Hettie B. Blackeman, and Mrs. C. McC. One of the pieces is a musical setting of the words of a woman poet (Mrs. Sarah T. Bolton). Five of the pieces in the collection appear to have been printed in the South during the Civil War, and of these at least three are undoubtedly scarce Confederate imprints. One of them, \"The Confederate's Grand March\", was much played by the military band of the 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The three undoubted Confederate imprints are:    \"Our Triumph at Manassas; Fantaisie Mazurka dedicated to the Confederate Guards of New Orleans, Composed by Mrs. C. McC.\" (New Orleans: P. 0.
