State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Richard Seawell Hinton (Dec. 1893 - Nov. 1943) was the son of Addison C. and Elizabeth (Seawell) Hinton of Raleigh. Hinton was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 25, 1918, and was assigned to Company F, 322 Infantry, a constituent element of the 81st (or \"Wildcat\") Division. He served overseas from July 31, 1918, to March 21, 1919, and was discharged from the service on April 25, 1919. Most of the letters in the collection were addressed to his mother, some to his aunt, Miss Miriam Seawell, and others to his sister Patsy (Mrs. Thaddeus Shaw Page of Charlotte) and his sister Grissell (Mrs. John D. Cooper, Jr. of Henderson). In addition to the letters, the collection contains paper memorabilia of Hinton's wartime service. There are some candid photo�graphs of family and Raleigh friends of Hinton's and newspaper cuttings.    Hinton's paternal great grandfather was John S. Hinton, one of the founders of the First Presby�terian Church in Raleigh, and his maternal great grandfather was Judge Henry Seawell. He studied mechanical engineering at North Carolina State University (then North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts) in 1912 and 1913, then entered into business with his father, a merchant tailor, and appears to have remained in the tailoring business until about the time of the death of his father in 1934. After a brief period as clerk of the Raleigh City Court, Hinton was deputy clerk of Wake County Superior Court from 1937 until his death. By his marriage to Grace Wynne of Raleigh, he had a son, Richard S. Hinton, Jr., who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.    As noted previously, most of the letters in the collection were addressed to his mother, some to his aunt, Miss Miriam Seawell, and others to his sister Patsy (Mrs. Thaddeus Shaw Page of Charlotte) and his sister Grissell (Mrs. John D. Cooper, Jr. of Henderson). Knowing that his letters were subject to a censor before they could be posted, Hinton was always circumspect in what he wrote home. His letters from Camp (now Fort) Jackson, Columbia, S.C., written between May 27 and June 21, 1918, are pretty much the standard fare young draftees wrote to their mothers, commenting on innoculations, issue of a standard uniform, drilling, and, in his letter of June 21, clearing pineland of trees and stumps at the camp. His letters written home from Camp Sevier, Greenville, S.C., speak of a meningitis quarantine in the camp, and qualifying with small arms. While he was at Camp Upton, Brooklyn, N.Y., from July 19 to the end of the month, awaiting shipment overseas, he speaks of an exchange of his uniform clothing for overseas woollens and of the kindness of the American Red Cross who has given all the soldiers a comfort bag with everything useful in it.    The collection contains no letters written during the brief period Hinton was in England awaiting shipment to France. His first surviving overseas letter is dated from France on August 20, 1918, and his last March 17, 1919. His letter of Nov. 14, 1918, speaks of the firing on both sides stopping at precisely 11:00 on Nov. 11, but he supposes his mother and�family already know more about the Armistice than he. The same letter says that the 81st Division \"went over the top\" on the previous Saturday and was under heavy fire for two days. A letter of November 17 to his sister gives a little more description of the two days fighting and the Armistice than does his letter of November 14, and the letter of Jan. 26, 1919, addressed to his mother gives a much fuller summary of Hinton's experience in France from the time he landed at Le Havre. The post-Armistice letters remark on camp life, his attendance at intelligence school at Chatillon, a week-long vacation at Aix-Les-Bains where the troops had entertainment by the YMCA, which he praises, problems with \"cooties\", and his hopes for an early discharge from the Army so as to help his ailing father in the family tailoring business.    The matter of race relations is touched on but briefly in the letters. In a letter of July 25, 1918, his uncle, Joseph L. Seawell, clerk of the North Carolina Supreme Court, sympathizes with Hinton's objection to the \"slackness in the color line\" that he thought he had observed in the embarka�tion camp at Brooklyn. All the same, when Hinton wrote to his mother on January 26, 1919, and told her that at the time that his military unit went into the Vosges Mountains to relieve a Negro unit, and he awoke in the morning to find himself sleeping in the shelter next to a black soldier, \"That didn't make any difference,\" he said.    In addition to the letters, the collection contains paper memorabilia of Hinton's wartime service. His letter of Jan. 13, 1919, encloses two one-franc notes and a 50-centimes note; there is a large map of France marked to indicate the places where he had been during 1918 and 1919; the folder relating to the YMCA contains souvenirs of Hinton's week at Aix--Les�Bains. The Red Cross \"comfort bag\" issued to him at the port of embarkation in July, 1918, has been transferred to the Museum of History. Most of the newspaper cuttings in the collection concern the war and the Armistice or are sentimental poems of the period. The folder of service and discharge papers includes passes issued to Hinton at camps in the U.S. as well as while he was in France, a file created by his uncle, Joseph L. Seawell, in what proved to be an unnecessary attempt to secure an early discharge for Hinton, and general information provided for all discharged soldiers.    Miscellaneous ephemera in the collection include visiting and business cards, two recipe pamphlets produced by the Rochester Stamping Co., of Rochester, N.Y., and the Franklin Sugar Refining Company, and candid photo�graphs of family and Raleigh friends of Hinton's."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"3 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Richard Seawell Hinton Letters.
