Dated 1864, but corrected in pencil by a previous archivist to 1865. Martha is sick again. Regardless she still walked to meet someone who promised to deliver a letter and tobacco to her husband, but the man didn't show up. She tells Francis of a large group of deserters close by that the militia is afraid of. John Deal has heard that there are 150 deserters but won't say who told him that.
