The Capital Buildings series contains fiscal materials relating to the building, maintenance, and furnishing of state government buildings in North Carolina, primarily in Raleigh. The records contain information about the labor, construction, furnishing, and maintenance of these buildings. The receipts and pay warrants for laborers include both free and enslaved persons. The records related to the work of enslaved persons are scattered throughout the folders in this series. The series also includes the receipts and salary for the Keeper of the Capitol and other employee payrolls for positions such as waiters, watchmen, gardeners, and laborers. The subjects predominately concern the Tryon Palace, the “Blue House” in Hillsborough, the State House, the State Capitol, and the North Carolina Executive Mansion.
