This position did nothing to stifle his strong patriotism. He was active with the Stamp Act resistance, and at times, assisted the Sons of Liberty.  Elected to the Superior Court judgeship in 1776, Samuel Ashe resigned on November 11, 1795 to accept the elected position of governor.
