Vacationists and tourists visiting the new Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area are surprised to learn that citrus fruit thrive so far north. The fruit trees there were started accidentally when housewives threw table scraps with orange or grapefruit seeds to their chickens or hogs. This tree under which Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis Barnett are picking oranges is about 25 feet high and has produced fruit for about 20 years. When North Carolina's department of conservation and development learned that citrus fruit could be grown in the Gulf Stream climate near Cape Hatteras, plants were imported  and given the natives to set out in their yards.
