William Dorsey Pender of Edgecombe County resigned his commission in the United States Army prior to the outbreak of the Civil War and offered his services to the Confederacy. In May of 1863 he was promoted to major general at the age of twenty nine, but was severely wounded in the leg on the second day of the battle of Gettysburg and died after the amputation of his shattered leg.
