State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Sarah Johnson Cogswell Whittlesey (1824-1896), writer of fiction and poems, was born at Williamston, N.C., and was the daughter of Luman Whittlesey by his second wife, Elizabeth G. Peale. After a brief, disastrous marriage, Ms. Whittlesey left Williamston and went to live with her parents who had moved to Alexandria, Virginia It was while there that her career as a writer was established, and it was while there that she wrote these letters to her girlhood friend, Catherine A. Wilson (Mrs. John J.) of Williamston. The three letters forming this collection appear to have been part of a small cache taken as \"spoils of war\" by a Yankee soldier on November 7, 1862, when Williamston was ransacked by U.S. General John Gray Foster's troops on an expedition out of federally occupied New Bern.    The fact that John J. Wilson was, like Ms. Whittlesey's father, a native of Connecticut afforded no protection to his property or to his wife's letters. The letters of March 11, 1858, and January 3, 1860, include comments by Ms. Whittlesey concerning her career as a writer.    The statement relating to Uncle Elisha's return to office at Washington, D.C., in the letter of April 26, 1861, is a reference to Elisha Whittlesey (1783-1863) who had been turned out of office as 1st Controller of the Treasury by Buchanan, but reappointed to the office by Lincoln. Her soothing remarks about the political crisis and the impending civil war suggest but a slight grasp on Ms. Whittlesey's part of the national state of affairs."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"1 page"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Sarah J.
