Wiley Martin attended high school in Belhaven, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon graduation in 1943 during World War II. Martin attended basic training at the U.S. Naval Station Great Lakes in Lake County, Illinois, where he was placed in an all-African American training company. From 1943 to 1945, Martin served in the South Pacific as a fireman aboard the SS Matsonia, a U.S. Navy troopship formerly known as the Malolo.  After his service in World War II, Martin remained in the Navy, where he served aboard the following ships: the USS Sarsfield (DD-837), a Gearing-class destroyer; the USS Bennington (CV-20), an Essex-class aircraft carrier; and the USS Intrepid (CV-11), an Essex-class aircraft carrier. Martin was serving in Caribbean aboard the USS Intrepid during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1963. Martin reached the ranks of Machinist Mate First Class, and Petty Officer First Class, during his military career.  After his Navy career, Martin used the G.I. Bill to attend a barber school in Raleigh, N.C. He would work as a barber at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., for more than twenty years. Martin married Hannah Rives Singleton on October 13, 1959. Wiley Martin died at the age of 79 on October 6, 2004, in New Bern, N.C., and was buried in Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington, N.C.
