The Buncombe Turnpike was a 75-mile route largely constructed through the present-day communities of Flat Rock and Hendersonville between 1824 and 1828.  It opened western North Carolina to commerce and development, but simultaneously impeded on lands historically owned and occupied by the Cherokee.
