State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"In the aftermath of World War I, the General Assembly of 1919 established the North Carolina Memorial Building Commission to provide for a suitable memorial to the men and women of the state who gave their lives, services, or property to the war effort.  The commission consisted of nine gubernatorial appointees and the following officials:  the governor, the president of the Senate, and the speaker of the House of Representatives.  Chaired by the governor, the commission was to continue until its work was completed and a report was submitted to the General Assembly.  The commission was charged with the following duties:  to formulate plans and make rules and regulations; to solicit private contributions; to acquire through gift, purchase, or condemnation a suitable site near the State Capitol; and to erect a suitable fireproof building to be used as a depository for preserving, exhibiting, and administering the records, relics, and memorials of  the war with Germany and her allies, along with other historical records and effects of the state.  By the end of its first year the Memorial Building Commission had not been successful in raising sufficient funds from private sources. The commission's subsequent request to the state for public funding was not granted, and the commission eventually became defunct without achieving its mandate.
