Letters from Murray in 1760-1761) refer to his suspension from office (1757) by Gov. Arthur Dobbs, efforts of John Rutherfurd (also suspended) for reinstatement, Murray's hopes to succeed Dobbs, the unprofitability of planting in North Carolina, and the difficulty of selling a plantation. After moving to Boston his letters concern family and business matters, Boston Massacre, Sons of Liberty, journey with daughter to England and Scotland (1770-1771), problems during the siege of Boston, and smallpox inoculations. His later letters (1776-1781) were written as a loyalist refugee in New York, Philadelphia, Rhode Island, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Letters from daughter Elizabeth refer to her education and social life in Boston and England, British prisoners in Boston (June, 1776), and postwar efforts to recover property in Carolina. Two letters (1770) are from Gen. Alexander Mackay in Britain. Originals are in the Massachusetts Historical Society."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"2 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["James Murray Papers.
