He did not find his regiment in camp when he got to the depot because they had gone on to Hamilton's Crossing; soon after he joined them there they marched to the Battle of Chancellorsville. He mentions again the numbers of men killed or wounded and the death of his captain in the battle. He is tired but otherwise well; he describes their rations, which are small and come seldom. Both he and his brother Charley lost their knapsacks in the battle but he thinks they can get along fine without them since the weather is warm. He doesn't know where the regiment will go next but lists a few rumors he has heard. John also mentions the death of Stonewall Jackson. To Martin Ramsey, Martha's father, John says that he lost all his paper in the battle and is writing on paper he took from the Yankees.
