The stringers were hewn from green timber and motises or slots were cut into them to accept the tenons (projections) on the ends of the step treads.  The steps treads with the tenons were made of well cured lumber.  The parts were assembled into a stairway and as the green stringers dried they shrunk around the already dry tenons and thus were created tight, strong joints that still hold strong today."},{"label":"Place","value":["Fontana Dam, North Carolina, United States"]},{"label":"Subject","value":["Fontana Village (N.C.)"]},{"label":"Time Period","value":["(1990-current) Contemporary"]},{"label":"Abstract","value":"For the North Carolina Exploring Cultural Heritage Online (NC ECHO) project, 1999-2007, photos were taken of archives, historic houses, museums, libraries and more."},{"label":"Table of Contents","value":"One or more additional photo(s) for this site visit, with filenames beginning ncecho_699, may be viewed at our library."},{"label":"Format","value":["Photographs"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Image"]},{"label":"Identifier","value":"ncecho_699007"}],"description":"Historic Fontana Village","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/dacdb165-9624-4642-87f8-00a7f5e7d5e9/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Historic Fontana Village","height":960,"width":1280,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/dacdb165-9624-4642-87f8-00a7f5e7d5e9/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/dacdb165-9624-4642-87f8-00a7f5e7d5e9","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":960,"width":1280},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/dacdb165-9624-4642-87f8-00a7f5e7d5e9/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/dacdb165-9624-4642-87f8-00a7f5e7d5e9/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/dacdb165-9624-4642-87f8-00a7f5e7d5e9/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/logo"}
