The Price family moved to Raleigh, where William Price Jr. graduated from Broughton High School in 1959. After high school, he attended Duke University in Durham, N.C., graduating with a bachelor's degree in history in 1963. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1961, and entered active duty in the U.S. Navy in November 1963. Price attended basic training at Newport, Rhode Island. After completing training, he served as a Navy officer aboard the USS York County (LST-1175), a De Soto County-class tank landing ship, and later the USS Chase County (LST-532), an LST-491-class tank landing ship. During his military service, Price served in the Dominican Republic during the Dominican Civil War in 1965. He also completed cruises of the Mediterranean and Caribbean during the Cold War. Price served in the Vietnam War from March to November 1966, initially stationed off the coast of V?ng Tàu, Vietnam. Upon his return to the United States in November 1966, Price was discharged from the U.S. Navy.  Price married Pia Tavernier in December 1964 in Durham County, N.C. After his military service, he worked at an insurance company for six months, before using the G.I. Bill to enter graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in September 1967. He received a doctorate in history in 1971. Price began working for the North Carolina Division of Archives and History in 1971, and served as the director from 1981 to 1995. He was a history professor at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., from 1995 until his retirement.
