Early papers include deeds, surveys, and correspondence. Several letters (1859, 1860) are from J. B. Strain of Chapel Hill to J. Q. Adams, Wake County, on topics such as farming; Strain's teaching of grammar, German, and arithmetic; the poor state of roads and difficulties of travel; and ad valorem taxation. Fifteen Civil War letters from J. Quincy Adams of the Wake Guards (Company D, 26th Regt., N.C.T.) to his parents are from encampments in Raleigh, near Fort Macon, and near New Bern. Besides describing camp life and routine family matters, he discusses such topics as drilling of the regiment and its review, sickness prevalent among the troops, ships passing along the coast, a request for a spy glass to be sent from home for Colonel [Z.B.] Vance, and the capture of 81 prisoners and the cargo of a Union vessel. Adams died in March, 1862 of typhoid fever during the Battle of New Bern. A letter from Nathan Adams, March 15, 1862, describes the martial law in New Bern. Family accounts and receipts comprise much of the remainder of the collection, including a 1923 Rex Hospital (Raleigh) bill. There are also estate papers for the estate of Dallas L. Adams. Miscellaneous material includes a photograph of a horserace at the Norfolk Fair (September 1922), a pocket map of North and South Carolina, a beer recipe, an 1855 price list for products at the port of Wilmington, and a photograph of Winona, Dallas, and Marguerite Adams in 1954."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"2 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Adams and Partin Family Papers.
