Mills registered for the U.S. Naval Reserves on February 27, 1943, which was his 18th birthday. He received a deferment, so he could farm during the summer and fall. Mills was transferred to active duty in the U.S. Navy on October 23, 1943. He completed his basic training at the U.S. Naval Station Great Lakes in Lake County, Illinois. Mills would attend radio training school at the U.S. Naval Training School at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he qualified as a 3rd Class Radioman. He would receive additional training at Camp Bradford, in Princess Anne County, Virginia, where he was assigned to his military unit. In August 1944, Mills-along with 15 men from his unit-were sent to deliver their ship, the USS LST 724, from its construction site in Jeffersonville, Indiana, down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans, Louisiana. The USS LST 724 was an LST-542-class tank landing ship acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War II, for the task of landing troops and supplies on enemy beachheads. After meeting the remainder of its crew in New Orleans, the LST 724 sailed through the Panama Canal, and stopped in California before arriving at the U.S. Naval Station in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in October 1944, for service in the Pacific Theater in WWII. The USS LST 724 remained at Pearl Harbor for two weeks before sailing with a convoy to Guam. From Guam, the convoy sailed to the island of Iwo Jima as the U.S. Navy headed towards Japan, and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945. From Iwo Jima, the LST 724 sailed to Saipan, an island of the Northern Mariana Islands. Next, Mills and the ship headed to Okinawa, Japan, to participate in the Battle of Okinawa from April 1, 1945, until June 1945. In July 1945, the LST 724 returned to Pearl Harbor for repairs and to prepare for its participation in the invasion of Japan. Following Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, the LST 724 was instead assigned to the U.S. military's occupation forces, and worked on occupation service from October 1945 to March 1946. Mills and the LST 724 would participate in the repatriation of Japanese civilians to the islands of Myoko and Ishigaki. They also moved war materials from Ie Shima (now known as Iejima) to Naha, Japan. The LST 724 returned to Naval Station Pearl Harbor, before being sent back to the mainland United States at the U.S. Naval Station Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, California, in the spring of 1946. James Mills was released from active duty in the U.S. Navy on June 26, 1946. Following World War II, Mills remained in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He used the G.I. Bill to study commerce at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During the Korean War, Mills was recalled for active duty. During the war, he served at the following locations: in a shipyard in Charleston, S.C.; as an instructor in San Diego, California, and at the U.S. Naval Station Pearl Harbor; in New Jersey; and at the U.S. Naval Air Station Oceana at Virginia Beach, Virginia. After the Korean War, James Mills married Dorothy Mae Head on December 10, 1955, in Burgaw, N.C. After his military service, he was a co-owner of H & P Wood Turnings and Burgaw Lumber Company in Pender County, N.C. James David Mills II died on May 11, 2013, in Burgaw, N.C., and was buried in Riverview Memorial Park in Pender County, N.C."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"4 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Summaries"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"All rights held by the State Archives of NC.
