State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Eleanor Park Vance (1869-1954), third child and younger daughter of John Park and Eleanor Robinson Vance, was born in Mansfield, Ohio. Her father, a prosperous insurance agent with an inclination toward music, sent her to the Cincinnati Art Academy where she studied color and design, and wood-carving under the sculptor and wood-carver, William H. Fry (1830-1929). She con�tinued her studies under Fry for nine years. In September, 1916, Miss Vance and Charlotte Louise Yale (1870-1958) established the Tryon School of Wood-carving and Toy Making. This collection of business papers and artifacts, while incomplete, sheds considerable light on the role of Miss Vance and Miss Yale in stiumlating and encouraging the handicraft movement in western North Carolina. It includes two small groups of correspondence dating from 1920 to 1940 (with half a dozen letters from 1948 to 1951).There are two booklets containing Miss Vance's dye recipes for textiles. A good collection of newspaper and magazine articles dating from 1917 to 1951 help piece together the history of the Tryon Toy-Makers, while three albums of photographs and a folder of loose ones help illustrate it. Some materials in the collection relate indirectly to the Tryon Toy-Makers, including a photo album dating from the period Miss Vance and Miss Yale were at Biltmore.
