Holman of Raleigh, including correspondence, invoices, bills, checks, and receipts (1874-1904) of Holman, Holman Brothers and Company, and Belo and Holman, commission and retail merchants trading in cotton, tobacco, lumber, and general merchandise. Major correspondents and creditors include the firms of A. A. and M. H. Willard, Wilmington; Wyatt and Taylor, Raleigh; and Willard Manufacturing Company, Willardville, Durham Co. Also papers and correspondence concerning the latter company, of which W. C. Holman was secretary- treasurer, including a letter book of W. H. Willard and Samuel A. Ashe, Raleigh, recording their correspondence as traders in cotton (1872-1876), especially to New York, and as successive presidents of the Willard Manufacturing Company (1896-1898), selling bagging, rope, and twine in Boston, New Orleans, Chicago. Later letters in volume by Thomas M. Ashe concern his father's losses and liquidation of the company. A notebook contains the plan of incorporation (1881) of the Holman Manufacturing Company, Holman Mills, Alamance Co., and brief minutes of directors' and stockholders' meetings, 1881-1899. Holman's accounts as receiver in bankruptcy for the News and Observer Company (1894-1897) include inventory of the company's assets. Also in collection are letter book (1880-1881) of Stronach and Belo of Raleigh, commission merchants for poultry, produce, and cotton, agents for the sale of buggies and carriages, and auctioneers; and ledger (1894-1897) of Jones Brothers, Wake Co.
