Mauney of Gaston County, N.C., to his mother Belle Mauney at Crouse, North Carolina, from Camp Humphreys, Virginia, during World War I. Mauney wrote the letter at 5:30 P.M. on September 7, 1918—two days after he was inducted into military service in Gaston County. At that time, Mauney was assigned for basic training to 3rd Company, 1st Recruit Battalion, 7th Engineer Training Regiment. Alfonso Mauney writes of his experience in camp since arriving at Camp Humphreys the night before, including how much work needs to be done to finish constructing the new Army camp. It is a typical letter written to loved ones by a new Army soldier arriving in a military camp for the first time. Exactly a month after this letter was written, Mauney died of bronchopneumonia at the Camp Humphreys Base Hospital on October 7, 1918, before he ever made it out of basic training."},{"label":"Format","value":["Documents"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"Image may be copyrighted.
