State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"The State Board of Architectural Examination and Registration was created by a legislative act of 1915.  Appointed by the governor, the board consisted of five architects, each with at least ten years of professional experience.  The purpose of the board was to establish regulations for the practice of architecture in the state and to examine and license qualified candidates.  The General Assembly of 1957 changed the board's name to the North Carolina Board of Architecture. In an effort to reform state licensing and regulatory agencies, the legislature of 1977 created the Governmental Evaluation Commission, also known as the Sunset Commission.  It concluded that the Board of Architecture be continued, but recommended certain changes.  In response, the General Assembly of 1979 added to the board two non-professional members who were to represent the public at large.  The board was also given authority to seek injunctive relief and to levy fines against licensees for unethical conduct.  Additionally, the board was authorized to require evidence of continued competence as a condition of license renewal when such competence was deemed necessary to the public welfare. In 1989 the board was empowered to levy a civil penalty not exceeding  five hundred dollars per violation against any registrant found guilty of incompetence, dishonesty, or unprofessional conduct.
