Project files (1936-1940) include instructions; style manual; reviews of completed publications; and material collected for a variety of projects, several of which were never completed. There are a few tall tales and legends, recollection of yellow fever epidemic (Wilmington, 1862), and reminiscences by Norwegian seaman in New Bern and by Goldsboro lawyer Needham Whitfield Outlaw. There are also data on Greeks in North Carolina, especially Asheville; a list of tobacco terms and copies of articles on tobacco from North Carolina newspapers (1807-1839); and material on the Negro in North Carolina, mostly from printed sources but including some legends and superstitions, and essays on Negro churches, education, Negro life in the 1930s, and Rev. John Cook of New Bern, d. 1856. Also The Negro in the NYA for North Carolina, by J. Percy Bond, Jr., Division of Negro Affairs, National Youth Administration in North Carolina, 1939. A subject file contains clippings and typescripts on education, churches, highway travel (1936), folktales of camp meetings, word usage and wild ponies on the Outer Banks, and oyster culture as a federal project. Miscellaneous WPA items are a list of all North Carolinians in Who's Who, 1908-1937; script of radio news program (Mar. 18, 1938); report on USDA Resettlement Administration; and speech on \"The Philosophy of a Works Program\" by a WPA official (1940). Printed material includes papers from a N.C. Supreme Court case involving the town of Newton (1926, 1927); constitution and reports of the Wake Co. and N.C. Bar Associations (1953, 1962); and pamphlets on rent control (1945-1950), socialism (1949), the antifluoridation campaign (1953-1956), and N.C. Republican party candidates (1946, 1962). Also printed speeches by Wendell L. Willkie (1940); U.S. Sen. E. H. Moore (Okla.) on voting by servicemen (1943); Judge Johnson J. Hayes on selection of new president for Wake Forest College, removal of college to Winston-Salem, and acceptance of federal funds by Baptist Hospital (1950); and Hon. Susie Sharp on the N.C.
