Lyda, age 57 and a resident of Edneyville post-office in Henderson County, North Carolina. In the application, Mrs. Lyda states that she is the widow of A. W. Lyda who enlisted in Company B, 16th Battalion on or about the 15th day of September 1863 and that while serving in Tennessee on or about the 15th of January, 1864 he was taken prisoner and taken to Rock Island, Illinois where he contracted measles. On the back of the application is written: \"Disallowed: Need proof as to death in ... Co. Regiment or Bat., did he enlist? When and where did he die?.\" Attached to the application were a letter from the Auditor's Department asking for \"..proof of your husband's identity. There's no 16th Battalion. In what Co. Regiment or Battalion did he enlist? When and where did he die.\" There is also a note from John H. Tinley that states Mrs. Lyda was trying to find out whether her husband died in the Confederate Army or whether he had enlisted in the U.S. Army while in prison in Illinois. According to North Carolina Troops, Andrew W. Lyda was actually part of McRae's Battalion (North Carolina Cavalry) and was captured in Cocke County, Tenn. He died in a prisoner camp in Rock Island, Ill. on March 7, 1864 of \"pneumonia\" (citation: p. 701, Vol. II, Cavalry).
