This can include language that is offensive, discriminatory, or depicts acts of terrorism or violence. Researchers will encounter racist words, phrases, and symbols within the correspondence and documents. William Walton Kitchin served as the 52nd governor of North Carolina from 1909 to 1913. Born on October 9, 1866, near Scotland Neck in Halifax County, he came from a prominent political family. Before his governorship, Kitchin served six terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1897 to 1909. Notably, he played a lead role in the Wilmington Coup of 1898, where white supremacists violently overthrew the elected government in Wilmington, resulting in the deaths of numerous African American citizens, the destruction of African American businesses and property, and the expulsion of opposition political leaders both black and white, marking the only successful coup d'état in U.S. history. As governor, he focused on economic reform, increasing expenditures for education, public health, and infrastructure, and supporting antitrust legislation. His term saw significant advancements in state infrastructure, including the construction of 1300 miles of roads and the implementation of progressive labor laws. The Modern Governors' Papers include only a small percentage of the total governors' papers available, which range from Richard Caswell (1776 - 1780) through Pat McCrory (2012 - 2016). The Archives also houses records of colonial governors and governors' letter books."},{"label":"Time Period","value":["(1900-1929) North Carolina's industrial revolution and World War One"]},{"label":"Place","value":["North Carolina, United States"]},{"label":"Subjects-Governors Papers Modern","value":["Roads--Design and construction","Highway planning--United States","Educational change","Antitrust law","Child labor--Law and legislation","Child labor--Law and legislation--United States","Labor laws and legislation","Proclamations","White supremacy movements--United States","White nationalism","North Carolina--Politics and government","Kitchin, William W.
