Melville Broughton, governor of North Carolina from 1941 to 1945. These few surviving papers include twenty-two personal items ranging in date from 1946 to 1956, and ninety-one items ranging in date from 1959 to 1966 concerning her activities as a member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Art Society and as a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Seventy-eight of the letters relate to Mrs. Broughton's activities as a member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Art Society. The majority of Mrs. Broughton's papers relate to the search for a successor to William R. Valentiner, the first director of the North Carolina Art Society. The twenty-two personal letters include, among thank you notes and such: an undated (but summer of 1946) invitation from Inglis Fletcher to Governor and Mrs. Broughton to visit her at Bandon Plantation in Chowan County enroute to or from the newly revived production of the outdoor drama, \"The Lost Colony\"; a note from Jane Rucker Barkley (Mrs. Alben Barkley) concerning the likelihood of her mother, Mrs. Estell Rucker of Raleigh, being able to come on a trip to Washington, D.C. in company with Mrs. Broughton and Mrs. Josiah W. Bailey; a note from Senator Frank Porter Graham about Mrs. Broughton's attendance at the joint session of Congress addressed by General Douglas A. MacArthur when bidding farewell to public service; and buildings named in honor of Governor Broughton at the State Training School for Negro Girls at Kinston (now the Dobbs School for Girls), and a new mechanical engineering building at North Carolina State University, Raleigh. Seventy-eight of the letters relate to Mrs. Broughton's activities as a member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Art Society. Upon the death of William R. Valentiner, first director of the North Carolina Museum of Art, in 1958, it became necessary to select a successor. At that time the duty of selecting a director lay with the North Carolina Art Society. Some of the society were in favor of naming to the position James Bernard Byrnes (1917--), associate director of the museum under Dr. Valentiner and acting director after his death. Others within the society wished to secure the services of another internationally-known figure such as Dr. Valentiner had been. As a result a committee of investigation, or fact-finding committee, was established, and Mrs. Broughton was named to the committee. In the end the directorship was given to Dr. Justus Bier (1899-1990). The majority of Mrs. Broughton's papers relate to the search for a successor to Valentiner. They include a file of copies of letters and telegrams in favor of the appointment of Byrnes, draft and final report of the \"Fact-Finding Committee\", and correspondence leading to the report of the committee that nominated Dr. Bier to the directorship. Included, also, is a copy of the 1960 report on the museum of art by the Commission on Reorganization of State Government recommending the museum be governed by its own board of trustees and not by the board of directors of the Art Society. Correspondence for the period from 1961 to 1966 is more routine in nature."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"2 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Alice Broughton Papers .
