It comprises mathematics exercise books prepared by James McGill of Richmond County in 1831 and 1833. It has remained in family hands since its creation, passing to McGill's daughter and through her to the donor, McGill's great-great grandson. According to family tradition, McGill, born about 1798, taught school in Richmond County prior to his departure for Mississippi at the end of the 1830s, and used this manuscript as a kind of textbook. The manuscript, however, naturally falls into separate groupings when its leaves are in order, and is revealed to be a group of exercise books rather than a textbook. Although the state's antebellum schools and academies commonly taught arithmetic to the rule of three, only a few of them appear to have offered courses in mathematics at the time these exercise books were prepared. Since they were created when James McGill was between the ages of thirty-three and thirty-five, one assumes that he might have taken a privately tutored course in mathematics at the same time that he was teaching. Hickory Grove Academy in Richmond County was chartered by private act of the General Assembly in 1829, and this set of exercise books might or might not have had some connection to that school. The last exercise book bears a notation in McGill's hand that suggests it probably had some connection to an academy in Marlborough County, South Carolina. The leaves of the manuscript have been arranged in the following manner: March 7 - March 16, 1831. Exercises based on selections from Books I and of Euclid's Elements. 11 leaves March 17 - March 27, 1831. Exercises in plane trigonometry endorsed, \"Ended by me Jas. McGill March 27th 1831\". 6 leaves March 28 - April 8, 1831. Exercises in heights, distances, distances, mensuration, and irregular polygons, endorsed, \"Jas. McGill\". 12 leaves of which the last 2 are blank. Undated. Fragment of an exercise book dealing with semicircles, endorsed, \"[North C]arolina Richmond [County] James McGill\". Part of a folio folded to form two leaves, of which the first leaf is nearly all torn away. Sept. 9 - Sept. 13, 1833. Exercises in mensuration, bearing the notation, \"Robert L. Roller S. Carolina Marlborough District Terel Aaccadamy\", and endorsed, \"A.B. James McGill\". 8 leaves of which 3 are blank."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"2 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["James McGill Manuscript .
