He has heard that James Anderson has written to Martha to ask to borrow money from her. John feels that his wife should keep her money because any loan she gives might not be returned to her. He asks her to write to tell him how much of the money he sent to her has arrived. He wishes his regiment would return to North Carolina so that he could see her. The price of goods is much higher in Virginia than North Carolina and he lists prices for tobacco and paper. He apologies for the sloppy, short letter because he and William Cowan are writing letters late into the night.
