Rouse of Kinston, and business acquaintances concerns his farms near LaGrange in Lenoir Co., houses in Greensboro, and tenants; insurance, banking, and newspapers; taxes; the Raleigh Country Club; Americans in China, including his son; orphanages, Soldiers' Home, YMCA, Red Cross, War Saving Campaign, Armenian-Syrian Relief Campaign (1919), and First Baptist Church of Raleigh; and memorials to C. B. Aycock, Robert C. Ogden, Stephen B. Weeks, the Palatines of New Bern, and others. Correspondence with educators in many states, legislators in Raleigh, representatives in Washington, D. C., and others concerns candidates for presidencies and other positions at State Normal and Industrial College in Greensboro, N. C. State College, UNC, and many other colleges and institutes in the state; references for acquaintances seeking positions in education, politics, and the military; national and state educational organizations; the AMERICAN SCHOOL magazine; county boards of education; problems of rural schools, a model rural school , a model rural school proposed by Katherine Smith Reynolds in Forsyth Co., and efforts to find support from Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations for Sandhill Farm Life School, Moore Co.; state and federal legislation for education; rural surveys in the PROGRESSIVE FARMER; and Joyner's appointment and resignation as superintendent of public instruction. Political topics include school taxes and prohibition; women's rights; Halifax and Warren county politics; and elections from 1904 to 1920, especially 1916. Correspondents include R. Bingham, Charles E. Brewer, E. C. Brooks, Jesse C. Caldwell, J. I. Foust, W. C. A. Hammett, Archibald Henderson, L. L. Hobbs, A. B. Hunter, D. B. Johnson, C. B. Williams, and other college and university professors; Governors Thomas J. Jarvis, R. B. Glenn, and T. W. Bickett; and S. A. Ashe, S. M. Brinson, Wallace Buttrick, Frank R. Chambers, Josephus and Frank Daniels, Claude Kitchin, Lee S. Overman, Walter Hines Page, Clarence Poe, E. W. Pou, Furnifold M. Simmons, Leonard Tufts, Mangum Weeks, and Sarah Weil. There are also copies of letters from Governor Bickett and Elihu Root, and to William Jennings Bryan, J. D. Murphy, and George T. Winston. Correspondence of the managers of the Raleigh YMCA basketball team is with managers of college and service teams in North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia (1913-1914).   Other material includes speeches by Joyner and other on the drive for more and better schools in North Carolina; summary of educational legislation (1907) and copy of bill for special public school tax; paper on relationship between state and county superintendents (1903); Joyner's recollections of Charles B. Aycock; biographical sketches of Calvin H. Wiley, E. A. Alderman, Joyner, and others; comments on schools in Wilkes and Cumberland counties; suggestions for changes in curriculum of Southern Baptist colleges; pamphlets on the National Geographical Society and on equal pay for women teachers; and items relating to the towns of La Grange and Enfield, \"good roads\" bonds in Lenoir Co., N.C. Teachers Assembly, and War Industries Board.
