Herman Graves was the oldest of ten children. He grew up in the community of Stony Creek in Caswell County, N.C., where his father worked as a farmer. In 1953, Graves graduated from Caswell County Training School, a segregated African-American school in Caswell County, N.C. After graduation, Graves worked for a tobacco company in Danville, Virginia, until he enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 10, 1955. Herman Graves attended basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. He then was assigned to mechanics training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon completing his training, Graves received orders for a tour of duty in Germany. He left the United States from Fort Dix, New Jersey, and arrived in Bremerhaven, Germany, in late 1955. Graves served in a Motor Pool attachment of the 536th Military Police Company, which was stationed out of Wurzburg, Germany, during the Cold War. He was transferred to Kitzingen, Germany, in the final months of his tour, and returned to the U.S. in the spring of 1957 through Fort Dix. Graves was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army on May 22, 1957, at Fort Bragg, N.C. He reached the rank of Spec-5 during his military career.  Following his military service, Herman Graves worked for Associated Transport, Inc., in Burlington, N.C. He later worked as a truck driver for Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation, until his retirement in 1994. In 1962, Henry Graves married Dorothy Thomas Rogers in Alamance County, N.C..
