During the 1920s, the West family relocated to Halifax County, N.C., where Mayhue West was raised on a farm in Enfield, N.C., along with nine siblings. After high school, he moved to Durham, N.C., and worked for a telephone company. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 15, 1941, at Fort Bragg, N.C. After basic training, West was assigned to the 35th Field Artillery Regiment. His regiment completed maneuvers in South Carolina; then, they spent a few months training at Camp Blanding in Clay County, Florida, before moving to Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. West remained at Camp Shelby for over a year; in March 1943, his battalion was reassigned as the 976th Field Artillery Battalion. The battalion was sent to Fort Polk in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana, to prepare for service in the European Theater during World War II. West's battalion left New York City for North Africa on in August 1943. They landing in Oran, Algeria, in September 1943, where they prepared to move to southern Italy.  West arrived in Naples, Italy, in November 1943. As the Allies attempted to break through to Rome, Italy, West's battalion participated in the Battle of Monte Cassino in January 1944, and the Battle of Anzio from January to May 1944. While in Italy, West served as an assistant to his platoon commander and as a machine gunner; he was reassigned as a motor sergeant after this. In August 1944, the battalion pulled out of Italy for the invasion of southern France (known as Operation Dragoon). West's battalion landed on the beach of Sainte-Maxime, France, on August 15, 1944, and advanced towards Grenoble, France. In December 1944, the battalion arrived at the France-Germany border, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945. After Germany's surrender in May 1945, the 976th Field Artillery Battalion remained in Germany as an occupation force. West returned to the United States in October 1945. He was discharged from the U.S. Army on October 14, 1945, at Fort Bragg, N.C., having reached the rank of Sergeant during his military career.  After the war, West worked on his family's farm in Enfield, N.C., for year. Next, he moved to Durham, N.C., where he worked as a police officer for five years. West married Margaret L. Marley on November 12, 1949, in Durham; they divorced in 1965. Mayhue L. West died March 28, 2007, in Raleigh, N.C., and was buried in Montlawn Memorial Park, located in the same city.
