Edward Wilson was Colonel in the U.S. Army, and at the time of Stephen Wilson's birth he was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. The family lived in Allied occupied Japan from 1946 to 1950. They moved to Stockton, California, to live until Edward Wilson retired from the military in 1954. Upon his retirement, the Wilson family moved several times: first to Dallas, Texas; next to Carl Junction, Missouri; then to Miami, Oklahoma. While living in Oklahoma, Stephen Wilson graduated from high school in 1960. After high school, Wilson attended Oklahoma City University for one year, during which he participated in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1960, he became involved in the NAACP Youth Council, and was arrested while participating in an Oklahoma City sit-in in 1961. While living in Oklahoma City, Wilson made contacts with a pacifist organization called the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and was offered a summer internship at their headquarters in Nyack, New York. During his internship in the summer of 1961, Wilson was offered a temporary position at the organization headquarters, so he remained in New York after the completion of his internship. While living in New York, Wilson participated in an anti-Vietnam War demonstration in 1962. He transferred to Berea College in Kentucky in the fall of 1962, graduating with a bachelor's degree in English in 1965. Stephen Wilson married Anna Laura Horn on September 9, 1964. The new couple moved to Durham, N.C., where Stephen attended graduate school at Duke University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. During his first year at Duke University, Wilson was notified by the local draft board that his 2-S student deferment status had been revoked. He convinced the draft board to reinstate his draft deferment so he could complete his second semester at Duke University. Before he was scheduled to receive his draft notice, Wilson enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in June 1966. He completed his basic training at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey. After basic training, Wilson was assigned as a seaman apprentice aboard the USCGC Absecon (WHEC-374), a U.S. Coast Guard high endurance cutter, which was based out of Norfolk, Virginia. During his service on the Absecon, Wilson participated in an Atlantic cruise, then received orders to attend Officers Candidate School (OCS) in Yorktown, Virginia. He graduated from OCS in June 1967, and was commissioned as an Ensign on a Medium Endurance Cutter based out of Yorktown, Virginia. In the fall of 1968, Wilson received orders to go to Vietnam. He attended a five-week training course in California in preparation for his tour of duty, and was deployed to Vietnam in March 1969. He arrived in Vietnam through Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon; then, Wilson was transferred to Phú Qu?c Island, which was located in the Gulf of Thailand. At Phú Qu?c Island, he was assigned as an executive officer aboard the USCGC Point Grace (WPB-82323), a U.S. Coast Guard patrol vessel that served with the U.S. Navy in support of Operation Market Time during the Vietnam War. During Wilson's service on the Point Grace, the ship was transferred to Cat Lo Naval Base near Vung Tau. In July 1969, Wilson volunteered to serve as a communications liaison officer on an Army of the Republic of Vietnam vessel. In December 1969, he was granted an early release from his tour of duty. Upon returning to the U.S., Wilson was released from active duty in San Francisco, California, having reached the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade) during his military service. After Coast Guard service, Wilson used the G.I. Bill to complete his studies at Duke University, graduating in May 1971. During the summer of 1971, he worked a forestry job in Nevada. He returned to Durham, N.C., afterwards, where he began working as a land surveyor. In 1974, Wilson established his own land surveyor firm in Carrboro, N.C. He retired in 1999, after which Wilson and his wife taught English in Vietnam from 2000 to 2002.
