Case papers include transcripts of the first trial in Wilkes county (October 1866), the second trial in Iredell county (January 1867), a map of the community in which the murder was committed, and both supreme court opinions. Also included is INSIGHT Magazine, Vol. 1, No. 3, (1966) \"The Tom Dooley Story.\" This is the story of a lover's triangle in the appalachian mountians. Herein, Tom Dula and Ann Melton are accused of the murder of Laura Foster. Dula, a confederate veteran, was defended by the former North Carolina Governor, Zebulon B. Vance. Vance succeeded in having the trial moved from Wilkes county to Iredell county, and in having the co-defendents tried individually. The case against Dula consisted of circumstantial evidence and actions, and the declarations of Ann Melton (co-defendent). The folk character, Tom Dooley, developed out of the person, Tom Dula. The court transcripts include the testimony of: Washington Anderson, Drewry Atkins, John Atkins, Jack Attkins, Calvin Carelton, George W. Carter, Carson Dula, Mary Dula, Ben Ferguson, James Foster, Lotty Foster, Pauline Foster, Thomas Foster, Wilson Foster, Martha Gilbert, R. D. Hall, Rufus Horton, James M. Isbell, Cecilia James, C. C. Jones, Hezekiah Kendall, James Melton, Frances Melton, Betsy (Betty) Scott, J. W. Winkler, Dorcia Witherspoon.
