His business correspondence and papers (1871-1896) relate to sales of cotton in Norfolk and Baltimore; speculation in cotton futures (1883-1885); collection of debts and mortgages; Albemarle Steam Navigation Company; and insurance policies. Letters from Thomas Jernigan of Winton and Norfolk, cotton dealer and American consul in Japan (1885-1889) and Shanghai, mainly concern business and American politics (1882-1896). Letters also from relatives in New Orleans (1882-1883); and from friends about local news, with mention of a Negro \"insurrection\" in Southampton Co., Va. (1889). Anderson's legislative correspondence (1888-1889) is from candidates for clerkships and speakership in the N.C. House of Representatives; and from Judge Benjamin B. Winborne and others about pending legislation, referring to positions taken on issues by the Farmers' Alliance. Also a citizens' petition for repeal of the Murfreesboro Railroad charter (ca. 1889). His court papers include letters about cases, magistrate's dockets (1881-1892), and miscellaneous warrants, affidavits, judgments, and lists of property seized in payment of debt. Papers of Dr. S. S. Daniel, physician, postmaster, and mayor of Winton, include a few letters (1893, 1896) and letter books, including post office records (1888-1897). Also some papers of former postmaster A. J. Northcott (1882); letter book for W. P.
