Pender was born in May 2, 1948, in Nash County, N.C., to J. Bryant and Helen Horton Pender. Luther Pender was raised on his mother's family tobacco farm in Chatham County, N.C. He graduated from Pittsboro High School in 1966. After high school, he went to work at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) field office in Charlotte, N.C., where he specialized in cryptography. While living in Charlotte, he attended night school at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Pender enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 4, 1968, during the Vietnam War. Pender completed his basic training at Fort Bragg, N.C., and his Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, where he specialized in communications. Upon completing his training, Pender was assigned to the 327th Signal Battalion at Fort Bragg. He received orders for Vietnam while at Fort Bragg, and arrived at Cam Ranh Bay on January 4, 1969. Pender served as a communications center specialist in the 1st Signal Brigade, and was stationed at Bien Hoa Air Base during his two tours of duty. He was released from active duty upon his return to the United States on November 4, 1970, but remained in inactive service until April 1974. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant during his military service.  After his release from active duty, Pender married Wanda Kay Jones on December 12, 1970, in Gulf, N.C. He had a career in the mortgage and finance industry, retiring in 2009. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from mid-1980 until January 1996. Luther B. Pender died on December 20, 2016, in Chatham County, N.C.
