State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"These seven manuscript items consisting of five letters, one receipt, and one last will and testament relate to Hezekiah D. Lott (1823-1895?) and to his granddaughter, Ernestine Lott Hogue (1894-1984). Lott, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to North Carolina about 1853. In the main, the letters concern the family.The fifth and last letter, Feb. 4, 1918, is a courtship letter written by Cyrus D. Hogue of Wilmington, N.C., to his future wife, Ernestine Lott.    Originally, Lott carried on his trade of miller, first in Burke Co., then in Forsyth Co., but eventually opened a retail trade in Salem, N.C., as a grocer. At the end of 1854 he married his cousin, Elizabeth Jane Lott of Griffin, Georgia. Of the three letters in this collection that were written to Hezekiah D. Lott (Sept. 17, 1852; Sept. 6, 1853; and Nov. 11, 1854), one is from a a kinsman, Isaac Lott, who had moved from Adams County, Pa., to Middlebush, N.J., and the other two are from Elizabeth Lott in Georgia.    The fourth letter in the collection, Aug. 12, 1894, was written to Mrs. H. D. Lott by the Rev. William Adams of Philadelphia (father-in-law of her son. Henry) on the occasion of the birth of their graddaughter, Ernestine Lott. The fifth and last letter, Feb. 4, 1918, is a courtship letter written by Cyrus D. Hogue of Wilmington, N.C., to his future wife, Ernestine Lott.    The remaining two documents in the collection are an 1860 receipt from A. C. Vogler of Salem, N.C., for purchase of a sewing table, and the original, unproved last will and testament of H. D.
