State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Papers of Johnston, Edenton lawyer, state legislator (1759-1784) and member of the Continental Congress (1780-1782), governor (1787- 1789) and U.S. senator (1789-1793), including a letter from John Rutherfurd about Henry McCullough's land (1763); correspondence (1769-1774) between Johnston and colonial agent Alexander Elmsley in London, letters from Joseph Hewes and William Hooper at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia (1775-1776) and from loyalist Thomas Macknight (1775); and Johnston's copies of his letter to the Wilmington Committee of Safety and his circular to sheriffs concerning elections for provincial congress at Hillsborough (1775). Other letters are to Johnston from the Wilmington Committee of Safety (photocopy, 1775) and from Lemuel Riddick (1776); and from Johnston (1778-1803) to Thomas Barker, Mrs. Penelope Barker, Henry Laurens, James Iredell, and Robert Carter about the General Assembly of 1788 and the estates of Gov. Gabriel Johnston, Thomas Barker, and Richard Lemmon. A letter from the North Carolina delegation to the Continental Congress to John Laurens, envoy extraordinary to France (1781), concerns British attacks on the interior of North Carolina (1781). Also included are three printed Acts of Parliament (1731) concerning debts, silk, and hops in America.
