Jacob Marling (1774-1833) was the first professional artist to practice in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was renowned for his precisely drawn details and his commitment to faithfully documenting the scenes he was painting. This painting is one of his most famous and most significant, since it is one of the earliest visual representations of the original State House. The Raleigh History collection offers a selection of original documents and materials from the NC State Archives and State Library chronicling the rich history of Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1792 and named for Sir Walter Raleigh, the city was meticulously planned by state senator William Christmas. Despite early challenges such as fires and slow growth, significant milestones like the arrival of the railroad in 1840 and the resilience shown during and after the Civil War have shaped Raleigh's early development. Included in the collection is an array of historical artifacts, such as maps, photographs, land deeds, and published histories."},{"label":"Physical Characteristics","value":"Water color painting"},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"1 page"},{"label":"Format","value":["Paintings (visual works)","Pictures (Illustrations)"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["General Negative Collection.
