Letters to wife Elizabeth, daughter of John H. Bryan, are from former schoolmates, one in Halifax (1847-1848);from sister describing journey from North Carolina to Alabama (1853); and from husband (1863) about runaway slaves, Federal troops in Edgecombe Co., and Gen. James G. Martin. Subjects of other letters include a Whig barbecue (Greenville, 1852), sightseeing in England and France (1853), a counterfeit bank note, State Fair week described by student at St. Mary's (1876), and telephones in Rocky Mount (1907).
