Dr. William Sharpe of New York purchased Bear Island and a mainland site known as \"the Hammocks\" in the 1920s. At the suggestion of the estate caretakers, John and Gertrude Hurst, Sharpe donated the land to the North Carolina Teachers Association, an organization for African American educators, in 1950 to manage as a beach for African Americans during a time when public beaches were segregated. The Hammocks Beach Corporation was then organized to develop the island for recreation, but, after unsuccessful attempts to raise funds, negotiated with the state to open Hammocks Beach as a state park in May 1961, the same year the state desegregated its state parks."},{"label":"Physical Characteristics","value":"Black and White Photograph"},{"label":"Format","value":["Photographs"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"Prior permission from the North Carolina Division of State Parks is required for any commercial use."}],"description":"Island walk, circa 1958","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/aa0f3e0b-4361-4a4b-9bb0-5dda52b148de/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"YORK_B27_HABEP0501","height":2175,"width":2133,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/92d4e2d9-d352-4cb5-8019-672447338e79/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/92d4e2d9-d352-4cb5-8019-672447338e79","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2175,"width":2133},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/aa0f3e0b-4361-4a4b-9bb0-5dda52b148de/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/92d4e2d9-d352-4cb5-8019-672447338e79/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/92d4e2d9-d352-4cb5-8019-672447338e79/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/ncdcr/iiif/logo"}
