Correspondence (1834-1840, 1850, 1875) includes letters from architect Ithiel Town about the commissioners for rebuilding the State Capitol, about Paton's proposed alterations to Town's plan, and about Town's work in Indianapolis; letters consulting with Philadelphia architect William Strickland; and letters and papers referring to Paton's plans for other buildings in Raleigh, at UNC, and at Caldwell Institute, Hillsborough. Letters from Gen. Beverly Daniel of the commission, builder William Bell, Congressman William Montgomery, workers, and suppliers concern hiring of workers in New York, wages and hours in other cities, wage negotiations, bulding materials, the railroad from the quarry, Fayetteville Arsenal, and buildings in Washington, D. C. A few letters, two photocopied, concern Paton's friends and relatives in Scotland and economic conditions there, his family in New York and North Carolina (1875), and his later career and descendants. Paton's printed memorial, sent to the governor from Edinburgh, petitions for further remuneration (ca. 1843). Also in the collection are some legal agreements, a photocopied pamphlet of testimonials to Paton (1834-1847) with photocopied engraving of Capitol and a printed speech by Samuel A.
