He was raised in Pittsburgh, where his father worked as a bookkeeper. He graduated from high school in June 1942. After graduation, Bauer worked as a machinist until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on December 5, 1942, during World War II.  Bauer completed basic training at Miami Beach Training Center in Florida. He was selected to serve as a drill instructor, and attended drill sergeant school. Bauer served at Miami Beach Training Center?first as a drill instructor, later as a military police officer until the end of World War II. While stationed in Miami Beach, he played on a U.S. Army Air Force baseball team. Bauer married Rita Mika on February 5, 1945. He was discharged from the U.S. Army Air Force on January 23, 1946 at Patterson Field (later Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) in Fairborn, Ohio. He reached the rank of Sergeant during his military career.  After his military service, Bauer used the G.I. Bill to attend Slippery Rock University in Butler County, Pennsylvania, where he studied physical education. He received his bachelor?s degree in 1949. He had a long coaching and teaching career at both South Park High School and Bethel Park High School near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also attended the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, earning a master?s degree in 1956. He would later work as a high school athletic director, then the athletic director at La Roche College in Pittsburgh. Bauer moved to North Carolina in 1994. At the time of the interview, he was living in Cary, N.C.
