Dr. Joseph Bell describes his early years growing up in Pembroke before discussing his lifelong goal of improving American Indian children’s healthcare. He reflects on his career as a pediatric physician as well as serving on state and national boards to improve access to healthcare for American Indians. He ends by highlighting the importance of Native doctors for Native communities. The interview was conducted by John Horan on February 10, 2024 in collaboration with the North Carolina American Indian Heritage Commission. The Oral History collection contains interviews conducted and acquired by the Oral History Unit of the State Archives of North Carolina. This unit seeks to work with individuals and communities across the state to record and preserve the lived experience of North Carolinians, as told by North Carolinians and to make these histories accessible for generations to come. This interview contains content that may be harmful or difficult to view, including language that reflects outdated, biased, offensive views as well as descriptions of conflict, racism, and violence."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:10 M:2 Y:2024"},{"label":"Rights","value":"All rights for this interview held by State Archives of North Carolina.
