I, 18th Regiment NCT, then later in Cos. B and D, 1st Battalion NC Heavy Artillery.  Resided in Duplin County, enlisted in New Hanover, fought at Ft. Fisher.  Survived the war and returned home 25 June 1865.  Photo taken post-war, probably at a veteran's reunion.  Cardboard backing is embossed \"U. C. Ellis, Wilmington, NC.\"  West is shown in formal attire and wearing several medals, one of which bears a United Confederate Veterans ribbon from the Cape Fear Camp, UCV, Wilmington, NC. Donated to State Historic Sites 8 July 1965 by Lois W. Jones of Takoma Park, MD.
