George Allen has come home and there is some discussion about how he escaped Wilmington. She reports on Union raids on peoples' homes across the area, including Union troops finding a local still and looking for brandy. The Yankees returned some of the horses that they had previously taken from the locals. She describes the placement of Union cannons, Confederate sharpshooters attacking Union ships, and Confederates putting 'a great many torpeders in the river and it tore up one boat and some barges and a transport it made them [Yankees] so made they try to get recompense our of the citezens'' Several older citizens have been targeted by Union troops for imprisonment or theft. Union troops burned Jess Stulls barn. Anne sent her brandy to a neighbor and hopes that will prevent the Yankees coming to bother her.
