Rogers details her upbringing on a family farm and her experiences with discrimination before she moved to briefly moved to Baltimore for job opportunities. She reflects on how circumstances have changed for the Waccamaw Siouan people since her girlhood, even as her community remains as tight-knit and interdependent as ever. This interview was conducted by John Horan on February 9, 2024 in collaboration with the North Carolina American Indian Heritage Commission. The Oral History collection contains interviews conducted and acquired by the Oral History Unit of the State Archives of North Carolina. This unit seeks to work with individuals and communities across the state to record and preserve the lived experience of North Carolinians, as told by North Carolinians and to make these histories accessible for generations to come.
