Civil War letters are from Capt. William J. Wilson, Co. I, 62nd Regt. NCT, at Cumberland Gap (1863); from Capt. Wesley N. Freeman, Co. C, 25th Regt. NCT, announcing his candidacy for legislature (1864); and from others concerning government trade of cotton yarn for wool (1863), a planned government tannery in Rutherford Co., a company of Junior Reserves (1864), and soldiers in Co. F, 25th Regt. NCT, sending money to families. Also in collection are Buncombe Co. marriage license for William Cathey and Catherine Turner (1800); plats and survey warrants (Haywood Co., 1835-1836); promissory notes (1838-1860); and miscellaneous slave and business papers, including records of cattle drives (1854-1863), labor contracts, laborers' accounts (1864-1866), and tax assessments and receipts (1867-1869). Printed material includes fiscal plan for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (1853); circulars (1854, 1856) from Supt. of Common Schools Calvin H. Wiley about teacher qualifications, text books, and an education convention; and circular about peddling of religious tracts (1854).
