Mendenhall Plantation was built by the Quaker Mendenhall family. Like most Quakers, they were pacifists who did not believe in war or in slavery, and like many Quakers in the south during slavery, the Mendenhalls actively participated helping enslaved persons escape through the Underground Railroad.
