Supreme Court justice (1895-1905), including his licenses, commissions, and typescript (six chapters) of published memoirs concerning his associations with slaves and freed Negroes and his Civil War experiences (Co. F, 12th Regt. NCT) in Virginia and Pennsylvania, with description of fight between Monitor and Merrimack. Early material includes probate statement for Timothey Thorp's will (Southampton Co., Va., 1763) with William Person as executor. Letters (1843-1845) to Montgomery's mother-in-law Janet M. Mitchel [Wilson] at home and at school in Richmond, include descriptions of Elgin plantation and Warrenton events; and there is a letter from Rev. William S. Pettigrew (1885). Also deed for a Warrenton coffeehouse (1834); broadside of program for reunion of Warren Co.
