The Union gun boats have fired on John's regiment's batteries and John expects battle soon. He expresses his faith in God, asks Martha not to worry about him and that their cause is noble. He has not drawn money yet since the paymaster is not in camp, but he plans to send money to Martha as soon as he can. He says that the regiment's baggage has been sent onto Fredericksburg by railroad for safekeeping and that he will be marching soon, but he is not sure where.
