Poteet writes his wife expressing his desire to be home. He considers deserting and says that eight or ten others will come with him if he leaves. There is a large bridge which stopped him from leaving last night because he couldn't figure out how to cross it if he deserted. He hopes to see her at Christmas. They haven't been paid yet but when they are he plans to send the money to her so that she can come visit him. He wants her to bring cakes, peaches and apples to him because they don't get enough to eat.
